PDF watermarks show up for a surprisingly wide range of reasons. The most common ones you’ll encounter in the wild:

• Stock image previews — When a PDF contains stock photos, the preview version carries the agency's watermark until you purchase a license.
• Branding watermarks — Some document creation tools automatically add their logo to exported PDFs unless you pay for a premium plan.

In most of these cases, you own the document or have legitimate rights to a clean version. The watermark is a formatting artifact, not a legal restriction.

For PDFs, the AI process involves converting each page to a high-resolution image, then applying inpainting — the same technique used for photo watermark removal. The model analyzes the surrounding pixels to predict what the background looked like before the watermark was applied, then reconstructs that region.

This works particularly well on text-based watermarks (DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL) because the underlying content — whether a document background or body text — is usually uniform enough for the model to reconstruct confidently.

• Uploading an already-compressed image — If your PDF was built from compressed images internally, the watermark and background may already share significant compression artifacts — making clean separation harder.
• Expecting perfect results on background watermarks — When a watermark covers document text, the AI is reconstructing obscured content. Results are good but not always perfect — complex typography under a watermark is the hardest case.

PDF watermarks come in three forms: text overlays, image overlays, and background watermarks. The first two have distinct layers the AI can target; the third requires full reconstruction. Export your PDF pages at 300 DPI as PNG, run them through an AI removal tool, and recompile the clean images into a PDF if needed.
